Florida's roofing license, without the sales pitch

Florida exam schools own the search results for this topic, so the basics arrive wrapped in a course catalog. Here they are plain: the license is Chapter 489, issued through DBPR/CILB, and it comes in two species.

Certified vs Registered

A Certified Roofing Contractor (CCC) works statewide. A Registered Roofing Contractor (RC) works only in the local jurisdiction that issued its competency card. Most new companies want Certified — the Registered route survives for local operators grandfathered into one county's system.

Exams and experience

Business & Finance plus the Roofing Trade exam, 70% to pass, and four years of experience with at least one year in a supervisory or foreman role. Application fees run $149–$249 depending on the cycle; the trade exam is around $295. Minimum insurance: $100,000 liability / $25,000 property damage, and a credit score under 660 triggers a bond or a 14-hour financial-responsibility course.

No small-job exemption — including subs

Florida has no handyman carve-out for roofing: installing or repairing a roof requires the license at any price, and working as an unlicensed sub under a licensed GC does not cure it. If a guide or a GC tells you small repairs are exempt, they are describing another state.

Then the contract law starts

Florida layers contractor-specific insurance-claim law on top of the license: §489.147's deductible-inducement ban ($10,000 per occurrence), the 10-day emergency-contract cancellation, claim deadlines of 1 year / 18 months, and void AOBs. The compliance pages cover that half.
