North Carolina's $40,000 roofing rule

North Carolina does not license roofers as roofers. Under G.S. 87-1, a general contractor license is required when a contract reaches $40,000 — and roofing is a specialty classification under that license. Everything about NC roofing regulation is that sentence plus its footnotes.

The business decision

A repairs-only model can live legally under $40,000 per contract indefinitely. The moment your average re-roof crosses it — and NC re-roofs routinely do — the business needs the GC license before the contract is signed, not after the deposit clears. The checker's NC verdict does this exact comparison against your typical job value.
