Mississippi · Checked October 22, 2026
State license. Mississippi licenses roofers through the State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) once a job passes a dollar threshold. Residential roofing, remodeling or repair over $10,000 needs a Residential Roofer license — a subclass of Residential Remodeler limited to roof coverings and roof drainage — with a Law and Business exam plus a trade exam. Below $10,000 no state license is required, though cities can still require registration and permits.
Checked in part. The load-bearing facts on this page (regime, threshold, exam) are sourced below, but one or more figures for Mississippi could not be confirmed on a primary board or statute page in the October 22, 2026 pass. Anything unconfirmed is printed as “Not published” — never estimated. Confirm the open figures with the board before you file.
| Item | Mississippi |
|---|---|
| Regime | MSBOC Residential Roofer license required above $10,000 (residential roofing) |
| Exam | Mississippi Law and Business Management exam plus the residential roofer/remodeler trade exam, both administered by PSI — pass mark 70%. All applicants must take the Law and Business Management exam; a trade exam is also required for the classification. PSI fee is $120 for one examination portion or $240 for two portions (PSI candidate bulletin). Applicants must complete all requirements within the board's window after applying (secondary sources say 180 days / six months to pass). |
| Experience | No minimum years of experience are stated on the MSBOC residential application checked. Applicants must list completed jobs matching the classification and provide three reference letters (one from a bank) per secondary MSBOC summaries. |
| Application fee | $50 application fee, which includes one classification; $100 for each additional classification requested (MSBOC residential application, not-returned) |
| License / registration fee | $50 initial residential license fee in secondary fee tables (the application fee and initial license are described together on the application) |
| Total state cost | $50 state application for one residential classification, plus PSI exam fees ($120 per portion; $240 for Law & Business plus trade), before insurance costs — Do not confuse with commercial fees: a new commercial license application is $400 plus $100 per additional classification, with $200 annual renewal (secondary fee tables). A $50 fee also applies for each trade exam waived through reciprocity (MSBOC application). |
| Bond | No state bond minimum published |
| Insurance minimums | Proof of general liability insurance is required, with MSBOC listed as certificate holder. No minimum amount is required for residential license holders; commercial applicants must show at least $300,000 per occurrence / $600,000 aggregate (secondary MSBOC summaries). Workers' compensation is required if the business has five or more employees. |
| Who qualifies | The application must name a qualifying party for each classification to be tested; that person takes the Law and Business Management exam and the trade exam. MSBOC furnishes the PSI candidate bulletin and notifies PSI of eligibility once a complete application is received. |
| Timeline | MSBOC reviews complete applications weekly (submitted Fridays, approved licenses issued the following Wednesday, per MSBOC testing page). Secondary sources describe board review in about 7-10 working days after passing scores are received. |
| Renewal | Annual — the license is valid for one year from issuance and must be renewed each year. Residential renewal is $100 in secondary fee tables. |
| Credential | Scope | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Residential Roofer | residential | Subclassification of Residential Remodeler, limited exclusively to installation, repair and improvement of residential rooftop structures — roof coverings and roof drainage. |
| Residential Remodeler | residential | Broader residential remodeling/repair license (structures up to three floors) for work over $10,000; also covers roofing within remodeling scope. |
| Residential Builder | residential | Ground-up residential construction over $50,000, plus remodeling/repair; commercial structures up to 7,500 sq ft in secondary descriptions. |
| Commercial license (Certificate of Responsibility) | commercial | Required for commercial construction, remodeling or repair of $50,000 or more. Roofing on a commercial job falls under the applicable commercial / building construction classification, not the residential roofer subclass. |
License trigger: $10,000 — Total project cost — residential roofing, remodeling, additions or repair. License required at more than $10,000 for residential roofing/remodeling; more than $50,000 for new residential construction and for commercial work. Thresholds apply to total project cost, not line items, and apply statewide. Source is the MSBOC FAQ as quoted by secondary legal sources — see verified note.
Prime contractors and subcontractors are both subject to the commercial thresholds. For residential work, subcontractors in electrical, plumbing, HVAC and mechanical trades must be MSBOC-licensed regardless of project value (secondary legal sources); no roofer-specific subcontractor rule below the $10,000 roofing threshold was published in the sources checked.
Most Mississippi cities and counties do not add a separate contractor license, but businesses must still register locally where required and pull building permits; local codes on zoning, debris and permits still apply even below the state thresholds.
No specific deductible-waiver statute found. No Mississippi statute specifically barring a contractor from advertising, offering or paying a homeowner's insurance deductible was located in primary searching on 2026-10-22. A 2025 bill (HB 1313) that would have added insurance-related residential roofer licensing/registration died in committee on Feb. 4, 2025 — it is not law. General insurance-fraud law may still apply — do not read this as permission.
